Everyone has an inner child. The inner child represents the child we once were, our experiences, emotions and feelings when we are growing up will create our inner child. If not healed the inner child will continue to influence our relationships, behaviours, thoughts and beliefs when we are adults. Our inner child can affect how we respond to negative emotions and view ourselves. 

Inner Child Healing Is About Becoming A Good Enough Parent To Yourself

Inner child healing is not about victim mentality or blaming parents. Everyone is doing the best they can with what they have, most parents have their own unresolved trauma and so cannot be good enough. If a child has good enough parents they will know that they are loved and accepted no matter what, they  will develop a healthy self image and a healthy relationship with their emotions. 

Inner child work is about becoming a good enough parent to yourself, about giving yourself what you needed from your parents. Giving yourself unconditional love, unconditional acceptance, releasing toxic shame and becoming comfortable with your emotions. 

Here are 5 techniques to connect with your inner child:

  1. Hypnosis & Visualization: Hypnosis makes it very easy to visualise. Using hypnosis a person can imagine themselves as a child. Interact with this younger version of themselves, offering comfort and support. Giving themselves unconditional love and acceptance.

  2. Expressive arts: Engage in activities you enjoyed as a child, such as coloring, finger painting, or playing with clay. Allow yourself to create freely without judgment.

  3. Letter writing: Write a letter to your younger self, expressing understanding, forgiveness, and encouragement. Then write a response from your inner child to your adult self.

  4. Get pictures of yourself as a child and take time to look at them regularly, connecting with that younger version of you sending love and acceptance. 

  5. Positive affirmations: Develop and repeat affirmations that address your inner child's needs, such as “You are loved,” “You are safe,” or “Your feelings matter.”
